Kodavatiganti Kutumbarao Biography

Kodavatiganti Kutumbarao was a popular writer associated with Telugu language in the 20^th century, who lived during the period, 28 October 1909 – 17 August 1980. He was associated mostly with non-fiction, and wrote Political essays under pseudonyms, “Aswini" & "Brihaspati". He also authored novels, and was a journalist by profession. He was an activist, who played an active part in "Virasama"( Viplava Rachayitula Sangham" ) movement conducted by revolutionary writers association. He was a recipient of Andhra Sahitya Academy Award and many other honours. "Chaduvu", Vaarasatvam"", "Gaddu Rozulu" & “Chandamaama” are among his popular works.

Kodavatiganti Kutumbarao was born on 28 October 1909 into a middle-class family in Tenali, Guntur district. He spent his early childhood in Tenali, where he completed his school education. He lost his father at the age of 5 and mother at the age of 11. He was brought up by his uncle in the same town. His elder brother Venkatasubbiah was a poet and writer who introduced young Kutumbarao to the world of words. In between he lost link with his brother too. He also got introduced into western literature.

At the age of 13, he started writing. But he couldn’t complete most of those works. He got married in 1924 before he graduated from high school. He studied physics at A C College, Guntur. He turned an atheist during his college days. In those days, he started his second attempt in writing. While doing his master’s at Benaras Hindu University, he published his first essay, Cinema in a magazine which won him a prize. After that he continued with writing. He has worked in different job roles at different cities at different points of time. He authored novels, short stories, essays, and also philosophy.
