Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Biography

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is an Indian professional footballer from Punjab, widely regarded as one of the best Indian players of present football scene. He plays as a goalkeeper for his team and is currently associated with Bengaluru FC in on-going ISL. He captained India national team for the friendly match against Puerto Rico on 3 September, in which India won 4-1. He is the first Indian to play in the UEFA Europa League. He is the first ever Indian to play a competitive match for the first team of a top-division European club. He is only the 5th Indian player to play professionally in Europe.

 

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was born on 3 February 1992 in Chamkaur Sahib, Punjab. Mohali is his hometown. He took up the game of football at the age of 8 and joined the St. Stephen's Academy in year 2000. He played some outstanding matches while at academy, which helped him to earn a place in state youth team, the Punjab U16s. Thus he made his debut in 2006 in Haldwani. He was associated with the club till 2009 and later joined East Bengal to play his debut I-league series.

 

In 2010, Gurpreet officially signed a professional contract with East Bengal and appeared in 5 matches for the team. He was associated with the team till 2014 and played for Pailan Arrows in loan during 2010-2011 season. Sandhu signed for Norwegian club Stabæk on 15 August 2014, and made his senior debut for the club in a friendly match on 18 January 2015 against Follo. On 30 June 2016, Sandhu became the first Indian footballer to feature in a UEFA Europa League match. In August 2017, Gurpreet joined Bengaluru FC from Stabæk.
