Farrukh Dhondy Biography

Farrukh Dhondy is an Indian-born British writer, playwright, screenwriter and left-wing activist of Parsi descent. Currently he resides in UK. In the year 1990, he received Whitbread Award for first novel, Bombay Duck. Samuel Beckett Award for the television play Romance, Romance, Collins/Fontana Award for Come to Mecca and Other Stories and Children's Rights Workshop Other award twice in the years 1977, for East End at Your Feet, and 1979, for Come to Mecca, and Other Stories are other awards received by Dhondy. East End at Your Feet, The Bikini Murders, Come to Mecca, and Other Stories, The Siege of Babylon, Prophet Of Love, Rumi: A New Translation, Poona Company, Black Swan, and Trip Trap are a few among his published books. His works include novels as well as short stories.

 

Dhondy’s education was completed at Pune. He won a scholarship to Pembroke College, Cambridge and later took a Master's degree at Leicester University. He has also worked as a lecturer at Leicester college of Further Education and a secondary school in London. He involved with the Indian Workers' Association while working at Leicester College. He joined the publication, Race Today and Black Panther movement in the year 1970 and became a close associative of Darcus Howe. It was his friendship with Darcus Howe which paved him way to writing. Very soon he became close to intellectuals like Stuart Hall, Sir V. S. Naipaul and Trevor Philips.

 

As a writer, his works include plays as well as children works, novels as well as short stories and playwrights. He has also written the script of Aamir Khan’s movie, Mangal Pandey. A few of his playwrights include - King of the Ghetto, Devdas, Mama Dragon, Trojans, Vigilantes, Split Wide Open and Kipling Sahib.
