Farokh Engineer Biography

Farokh Engineer is a former Indian cricketer who was a national player. He played 46 Tests for India. He played for Bombay in regional cricket and first-class matches. He also played for Lancashire in England from 1968 to 1976. He was most active in the 1960s and 1970s and has scored 2611 runs from 46 tests he played in the international cricket. He also played 5 ODIs. He served as a batsman and wicketkeeper for team India. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian sports, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1973.

 

Farokh Maneksha Engineer was born into a Parsi family in Mumbai in 1938. He studied at Podar College, Matunga. He played domestic cricket for Mumbai in the 1950s and marked his debut in international cricket in the year 1961. He was a member of Indian cricket team till his retirement in 1975. He played as a wicketkeeper for most of the matches for India. He was also an aggressive batsman and owns two test centuries in his credit. He scored a total of 16 half-centuries in test career. He was the wicket keeper for the "Rest of the World" team in the early 1970s which played matches against England and Australia.

 

He was a member of Lancashire County Cricket Club for many years between 1968 and 1976. In 1965 he was declared as the Indian Cricketer of the Year. He received Man of the match award for a match against East Africa, in which India won by 10 wickets. After retirement he didn’t leave cricket. He is currently associated with IPL as a cricket referee. In 2018 he received CEAT's life time achievement award.
