Dibyendu Barua Biography

Dibyendu Barua is a Grandmaster of chess in India. He is the second grandmaster of India after Viswanathan Anand. He was born on 27th October 1966 in Kolkatta in West Bengal. He participated in the Indian National Championship of chess in 1978 when he was just 12 years old. He beat the number two Grandmaster of the world Viktor Korchnoi in 1982. He won the national championship for the first time in the year 1983. He became a grandmaster in 1991.

He has won the National Chess Championship three times. He was considered to be a chess prodigy when he created a stir by participating in the National Chess Championship when he was just twelve years old.

His maiden National Championship came in the year 1983 and then he got this title again in the year 2000. He has to beat four grand masters to win the game. When he defeated the number 2 in chess, Viktor Korchnoi in London, he was only sixteen years old. He became an international master after that. He married Saheli Dhar Barua.

However he could not thrive in the international level chess. Main reason for this could be said as the lack of latest resources, books and computers. He could not get professional coaches to coach him. So he had to take a very long period of nine years to earn the Grand Master title.

He was made as the Grand Master in 1991. But still he had to face lack of resources and funds to improve his performance to suit the international standards. He started the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy in Kolkatta in September 2005 to coach the young children who are talented in the game. At the initial phase training was given to 22 students but now this has increased to 200 trainees.

He met his wife Saheli Dhar in a Chess tournament in 1988. When he offered a draw she refused and defeated him in the game. This impressed him a lot and a friendship was developed which blossomed into a marriage. She left playing chess professionally after her marriage and is coaching in their chess Academy. Dibyendu Barua received Arjuna Award in the year 1983 for his performances.
