Dharamvir Bharati Biography

Dharamvir Bharati was a renowned Hindi poet, author, playwright and a social thinker. He served as the chief editor of Hindi weekly magazine Dharmayug from 1960 till his death in 1997. In 1972, he received Padma Shri and in Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Hindi Playwright in 1988. One of his significant works, Suraj ka satwaan ghoda has been made a feature film by renowned film maker, Shyam Benegal in 1992 which accumulated numerous awards at state and national level. Andha Yug is another noted playwright of Bharati that has been staged several times by different drama troupes. Among his novels, Gunaho Ka Devta is the most noted work.

Dharamvir Bharati was born in Allahabad to Chiranji Lal and Chanda devi on December 25, 1926. He lost his father at a younger age and following it, the family faced a lot of financial troubles. He completed MA in Hindi from Allahabad University in the year 1946. He has also won the “Chintamani Ghosh Award” for securing highest marks in Hindi. During this time, he worked as the sub editor of magazines like Abhyudaya and Sangam. In 1954, he took PhD. In 1960, he became the chief editor of Hindi weekly magazine Dharma Yug, of Times group. He served the magazine as chief editor till his death. During this time, he necame a field reporter and covered the Indo-Pak war that resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh.

Bharati has married twice. In 1954 he married Kanta Bharati and had one daughter. But the marriage ended in a divorce and later he married Pushpa Bharati. He had two kids from this marriage. His popular poetry works include - Kanupriya,Thanda Loha, Saat Geet Varsh and Sapana Abhi Bhi. Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, Giyara sapno ka desh, Prarambh va Samapan and Gunaho Ka Devta are his important novels. He has also written a few stories and essays.
