Deepa Malik was born on 30 September 1970. She hails from Bhainswal, Haryana. Her story is really inspiring. She was diagnosed with a spinal tumour in 1999 at the age of 19. Later she underwent 3 spinal surgeries and got 183 stitches between her shoulder blades in a period of 14 years. She was raised in an army family and married to an army officer. She was a mother of two when she was diagnosed with the tumour. Her husband was fighting in Kargil then. She was left paralysed from the waist down, and doctors gave opinion that she would never walk again.

She decided to become a swimmer, a biker, an athlete & an adventure junkie at the age of 36. But in 2010 Paralympics she earned first medal for India, among female athletes. She continued her success streak for next two seasons too. Apart from sporting events she is also associated with many sport promoting events and serves as the 'Clean India' brand ambassador for NMDC and expert consultant for Disability Inclusive Accessible Infrastructure for Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs 'Smart Cities' project.
