D. B. Deodhar Biography

D. B. Deodhar was an Indian cricketer from Pune who played first class matches in British India. His active career was between 1911 and 1948, and he played as an all-rounder. After retirement he served the role of an administrator many times. Vice President of the BCCI, the President of the Maharashtra Cricket Association, and also a national selector are some of the elite positions he held as an administrator within Indian Cricket. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian sports and cricket, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1965. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 101 and was fondly called - Grand Old Man of Indian Cricket.

 

Dinkar Balwant Deodhar, shortly called D. B. Deodhar was born in Pune, then known as Poona in British India. Apart from his sports career, he was a professor at S.P. College in Pune. As a cricketer he was known as an aggressive right-hand batsman and leg-break bowler. He was associated with domestic cricket for many years between 1911 and 1948, and played for Maharashtra team. He also served as team captain in Ranji Trophy matches from 1939 to 1941.

 

In his first-class cricketing career, he played a total of 81 matches, scoring 4522 runs at an average of 39.32.  His highest score is 246. He retired from cricket soon after independence. He passed away on 24 August 1993. Deodhar Trophy for limited over matches is named after him. This inter-zonal cricket tournament was started in 1973. He played cricket in the pre-independent era, and got opportunity to appear both before the First World War and after the Second World War.
