Cotah Ramaswami Biography

Cotah Ramaswami was an Indian sportsperson who represented his country in two games – cricket and tennis. He was born on 16 June 1896 in Chennai. Ramaswami left his home in Adyar on the morning of 15 October 1985 at the age of 91 and never returned. He was presumed dead in 1990 though there were rumours about him being sighted at many times. His family name appears variously as Cota, Cotah and Cotar, and his name is also pronounced as CotaRamaswami. Many members of his family were associated with cricket. His fatherBuchiBabu Naidu is considered the father of Madras cricket. His two brothers, son and four nephews have played first class cricket matches for Madras.

 

He was born on 16 June 1896 in Chennai. He was the youngest son of Buchi Babu Naidu, the great patriarch of Madras cricket. Many of his family members were sportsmen mostly associated with cricket. When his maternal uncle died he was adapted by his maternal grandfather who gave him his family name.He studied in Wesley High School, Wesley College and the Presidency College. While at college days he was associated with cricket and has played some outstanding matches. He completed his higher studies at Cambridge University.

 

While studying at Cambridge University during 1919-1923, he won Doherty Cup tennis tournament for college students in 1921 and won a 'half blue'representing Cambridge in the doubles. The following year he earned ‘a blue’. He played doubles with Syed Mohammad Hadi who excelled in many sport games. In 1922, Ramaswami represented India in the Davis Cup. He returned to Chennai in 1924 and worked as an officer in Agricultural Department. At the age of 40 he played two test matches for India against England. He later served as a selector and manager to Indian team too.
