Chandu Borde Biography

Chandrakant Gulabrao Borde, popularly known as Chandu Borde is a former member of Indian cricket team. He played for India between 1958 and 1970. After retirement Borde became a cricket administrator, serving as the Chairman of national selectors. Borde scored 1604 First Class runs in 1964-65 which is an Indian record for a calendar year. He was a right handed batsman for India, who occasionally bowls for his team as well. He played 55 test matches as well as 251 first class matches. He scored 3061 runs from his test matches at an average of 35.59 and it includes 5 hundreds and 18 50’s. His highest score is 177 not out. He has also picked 52 international wickets at a bowling average of 46.48. He got 5 wickets in one innings.

 

Borde was born on July 21, 1934 in Pune. Borde made his debut in 1954/55 domestic season for Baroda against Gujarat in Ahmedabad. In the next season, he made good innings which included his maiden century against Mumbai also. Borde made his debut in the First Test of West Indies tour of India on 28 November 1958. He was dropped from the third match following his bad performance in first two test matches, giving debutant Ramnath Kenny a chance. Kenny’s bad performance caused selectors to choose him in the next match. He made his first 50 in the innings. In the Fifth and final Test of the series, he made 109 and 96 runs respectively thus finding his space in the national team. His half centuries played key role in giving India first victory over England in the Fourth Test played in Eden Gardens.

 

Borde has received numerous honours throughout his life. In 1966, he received Arjuna award and in 1969, Padmashri. In 2002, he was honoured with India's third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan. In 2006 he received CK Nayudu Award for Lifetime achievement awarded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
