Chandradhar Barua Biography

Chandradhar Barua was an eminent writer, dramatist, lyricist and poet from Assam. He represented India at the Round Table Conference held at London in1930 to discuss Indian independence. He was second president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1918 held at Goalpara and also known as the founder secretary of Assam Sahitya Sabha Patrika, the official journal of the Asam Sahitya Sabha. He served as the secretary of Assam Sahitya Sabha Patrika during the period 1927 to 1936. The journal contained Assamese literature as well as articles on literature. Assam Sahitya Sabha is the foremost and the most popular organization of the state.

 

As a literal, he was deeply inspired by literary works of Michael Madhusudan Dutt. Though he imitated Dutt’s methods, it was not so successful. Sahitya Ratna, Meghnad badh, Bhagya Parikhsa, Ranjan, Ratnakush and Kamrup Jiyari are his best known works, for which he is remembered most. He did not belong to the Jonaki cycle, or to the post-Jonaki era. He is known as a satirist as well as a romanticist. Many of his works have sharp criticism on orthodoxy in a satire way. His romantic lyrics make him a popular poet.

 

He was born on 15 October 1874 in Dergaon, Golaghat, Assam. He was a lawyer and tea cultivator in profession. Ranjan, Bidyut Bikash, Kamrup Jiyori and Muktaboli are his famous poetry collections. Meghnad Badh, Bhagya Porikha, Mughal Bijoy and Ahom Sandhya are his plays and Shanti is his novel. Sahitya Ratna published in 1929 is his most notable work. He passed away on 26 October 1961 in Jorhat, Assam.
