Chandiroor Divakaran Biography

Chandiroor Divakaran is a noted poet and folk-song writer belonging to Malayalam literature. Chandiroor Divakaran is the pen name of Kalathil Makki Divakaran from Chandiroor of Alappuzha district, Kerala. In 2011 he received Ambedkar National Award for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. He has penned several folk songs, drama songs and Villu Paatu, which have become popular over the years. Started his career in the 1960s, he has completed more than 50 years in the field of literal Malayalam.

 

Divakaran is a native of Chandiroor of Alappuzha district. That’s why Chandiroor tag got added to his name. Kalathil Makki and Kurumba are his parents, born in the year 1946. He is married to Ambujakshi and the couple has three children. He started writing poetry at a young age. After learning Sanskrit in Pre-degree education course, he learnt Malayalam Vidwan Course under Vidwan G. Kumaran Nair. His studies was completed in the year 1973 and since then he worked in several tutorials. In 1980 he joined government service as an LDC Clerk, in Kerala State Housing Board. He worked in the government sector till his retirement in 2001. Throughout these years, he published several books on folk songs and poetry collections.

 

Since 1965 he is active in his literal career. His first work – Radha was published in the year 1965. Parnnupoya Inakkuyil, Malsyaghandhi, Sheriffa, Udayavum Kathu, Aazhathilodungiya Jeevithangal, Madhya Durantham etc are some of his early works. Karnikaram (2013) and Mounanombaram (2011) are his recent published works. In 2011 he was awarded with the Ambedkar National Award for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. Mathrubhumi Award in 1981, Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishath Award in 1985, Bodhi Sahithya Puraskaram in 2003 and Jnanodhayam Sabha P.K.M Vayanasala Award in 1977 are the other major honours received by him.
