Buddhadeva Bose Biography

Buddhadeva Bose was a major Bengali writer of the 20th century. He was also a critic and editor. Though known as a poet, he has also published books on novels, short stories, plays and essays. After Tagore, Bose is regarded as the most intellectual writer of Bengal and his name is counted among the top 5 Bengali writers till then. Noted Bengali writer and accomplished singer, Pratibha Basu is his wife and they got married in the year 1915.

 

Buddhadeva Bose was born in Comilla in 1908 as the son of Bhudeb Chandra Bose and Benoy Kumari. He lost his mother soon after his birth and his father married again. As a result, he was brought up by his grandparents. He did his schooling from Dhaka Collegiate School, Comilla and Noakhali and completed matriculation in the year 1925. His early life was associated with Dhaka. He took MA in English literature from Dhakka University. He was the topper at university and the marks were surpassed only in the year 2007. Moved to Kolkata in 1931, he started private tuition to earn a living. Later he worked in several universities and colleges as professor. While studying at college, he has been associated with literal magazine, Kallol.

 

His first book, "Bandir Bandona" was a collection of poetry published when he was 17. His first novel, "SaDa", was published when he was 18, in 1930. He has published more than 40 novels of which "Tithidore", published in 1949 is regarded as his masterpiece and still loved by readers a lot. Apart from 40 novels, he has published 160 books belonging to different categories thus making a total of 200 books published. He has been a part of Progressive Writers' Association in the late 1930s.
