Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay Biography

Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay was a famous writer from Bihar in the 20^th century. He was a renowned writer of Bengali language. He is known for his childish writings and humorous elements and child psychology are well reflected in his writings.  Mukhopadhyay’s first book, ‘Ranur Prothom Vagh’ was published in 1934. Many of his literal works form a part of school and college academic syllabus not only in India, but also in Bangladesh. His works have become a part of school and graduation studies of Bihar and West Bengal. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honours. University of Burdwan gave him an honorary doctorate while Visva-Bharati University awarded him with Desikottama.

Mukhopadhyay was born on 24 October 1894 in the village of Pandoul. The village now belongs to Mithila of Bihar. Bipin Bihari Mukherjee and Giribala Devi were his parents. He spent his younger days in Darbhanga, Bihar, where he completed his school education. He completed his higher studies in Patna and Kolkata. After studies he started his career as a teacher and later became a journalist. He worked with "Indian Nation", an English newspaper published from Patna.

He published his first book in 1934. Since then he contributed numerous short story collections, novels, travelogues, plays and books for children to Bengali literature. His works - Fuleshari, Kanchan Mulya, Nilanguriya, Borjatri and Sriman Prithviraj have been adapted to silver screen. Kushi Panganer Chithi,     Duar Hote Adure and Ajatar Joyjatra are his travelogues. Ananda Puraskar in 1958, Rabindra Puraskar in 1972 and Sharatchandra Puraskar in 1978 are the major awards received by him.  He died on on 29 July 1987 aged 93. He was a bachelor.
