Balbir Singh Kullar Biography

Balbir Singh Kullar was an Indian hockey player from Punjab. He was also a police officer who worked with Punjab Police. For his contributions towards the field of hockey, he has been honoured with Arjuna Award in 1999 and Padma Shri in 2009. He retired as a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in February 2001. During his police service, he has served as Deputy Superintendent of Police since 1981 and Indian Police Service officer in 1987. Singh was a part of the All India Police team during 1968-1975, and has led his team as a captain to several victories. He was a member of National team which won Asian Games Gold in 1966 (Bangkok) and the Olympic Bronze in 1968 (Mexico).

 

Balbir Singh Kullar was born in Sansarpur, a village in Jalandhar district in the Indian state of Punjab on 8 August 1942. He played hockey since school days, and served as team captain too in the second half of 1950s. He played as part of the Combined University Team, and has represented team Punjab at National Level too. He had a brief stint with Bengal sports club Mohun Bagan, but as a hockey player. He played for Indian Railways and Punjab Police later.

 

He joined Punjab police in 1962 and rose to many prominent orders. He retired as Deputy Inspector General in 2001. During his younger days, he played hockey for his police team. He also toured in many foreign countries as a part of hockey tournaments. Interestingly there are many Indian hockey players with the name – Balbir Singh, and all of them became successful; Balbir Singh Senior, Balbir Singh (born 21 September 1945 in Faisalabad) and Balbir Singh Kular to name a few.
