Bahadur Prasad Biography

Bahadur Prasad is an Indian athlete and middle-distance runner who specializes in middle distance events such as 800, 1500 and 5000 metres events. His National record in 1500 meters made in December 1995 was broken only after 23 years in 2018 Commonwealth Games by Jinson Johnson. But he currently holds national record in 5000 metres, a record he made in 1992, a record still to be broken. Prasad represented India at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the 5000 m event, and also took part in 1500 m at 1996 Atlanta Olympics. For his contributions and achievements in middle distance running, he was honoured with most prestigious Arjuna Award in 1992.

 

His full name is Bahadur Prasad Singh. He was born on 1 September 1965 in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. Billauwa of Sidhwal is his native village. As an athlete, he has been associated with Indian railways during his active professional days. He has been regular and most active in the 1990s, when he represented in both the Summer Olympics events of the decade. Though he couldn’t finish among best three in both these events, he made some outstanding performances of the seasons, garnering everyone’s attention.

 

In the 1990s he laid two national records in middle distance events - in 1500 meters and 5000 metres event. The record in 5K event is still to be broken, even after two decades. On 23 December 1995, Prasad clocked a time of 3:38.00 at 1500 meter event at the 1995 South Asian Games in Chennai, a national record broken only in 2018. Singh set the 5000 m record in Birmingham, UK on 27 June 1992. 13:29.70 is a national record and his personal best too.
