Baburao Bagul Biography

Baburao Bagul was a famous Marathi writer, most popular with short stories. His noted works are "Jevha Mi Jaat Chorli" (1963), " Maran Swasta Hot Ahe" (1969), "Sahitya Ajache Kranti Vigyan", "Sud" (1970), and "Ambedkar Bharat". He is widely regarded as a pioneer of Modern Marathi Literature. He belonged to dalit community, but widely accepted as a great writer. He was deeply influenced by thoughts of Karl Marx, Jyotiba Phule and Babasaheb Ambedkar and those thoughts were expressed in his powerful words too.

 

Baburao Ramaji Bagul was born in Nashik in 1930, July 17. He published short stories in several magazines and slowly gained attention from public. He did odd jobs till 1968. His first collection of stories, Jevha Mi Jat Chorali was published in the year 1963 and after that he didn’t look back. It’s often regarded as an epic of Marathi and has been reproduced on big screen as well. It was made into a film by actor-director Vinay Apte.

 

In 1967, he published his first collection of poems. The work – Akar was well received both by readers as well as critics and in 1969, his second collection of short stories Maran Swasta Hot Ahe. Thus he became one of the leading writers of the time. Maran Swasta Hot Ahe is now considered an important landmark in Dalit writing in India and for this work he received 'Harinarayan Apte Award' by the Government of Maharashtra. After that he became a full time writer.

 

His published works are "Jevha Mi Jaat Chorali" (1963), "Maran Swasta Hot Ahe" (1969), "Sud" (1970), "Dalit Sahitya Ajache Kranti Vignyan” and “Ambedkar Bharat”. A few of his works have been translated to other languages. He died on March 26, 2008 at Nashik. Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University instituted the 'Baburao Bagul Gaurav Puraskar' award in recognition of his contributions to Marathi literature and gives award to a new writer every year.
