Arundhati Bhattacharya Biography

Arundhati Bhattacharya, an Indian banker is the first female and youngest Chairperson of State Bank of India, India’s largest bank. She is one of the prominent women figures for the year 2015. In 2014, she entered the Forbes list as the 36th most powerful woman in the world. The following year, her name was listed in the 30th place. She was also ranked among the FP Top 100 Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine, apart from the 4th most powerful women in Asia Pacific 2015 by Fortune. She started her association with SBI in 1977 as a probationary officer.

 

She was born in Kolkata on 18 March 1956. She spent her childhood in Bhilai, where her father Prodyut Kumar Mukherjee worked at Bhilai Steel Plant. Her mother was a homeopathy consultant in Bokaro. Arundhati completed her school education in Bokaro. She joined State Bank of India in 1977 as a probationary officer at the age of 22. Since then she served at various positions of the bank including foreign exchange, treasury, retail operations, human resources and investment banking. She became the first female and youngest Chairperson of State Bank of India in the year 2013 succeeding Pratip Chaudhuri. By then, she had already completed over 4 decades of service with SBI, India’s leading commercial banking services. She was among the four contenders for the post.

 

She oversees 220,000 staff members in 16,000 branches spread across the country and 35 other nations, and services 225 million customers. She pioneered a two-year sabbatical policy for female employees taking maternity leave or for other family reasons including elder’s care. She has also served in SBI’s branch at New York.
