Anand Biography

Anand is one of the renowned writers of Malayalam at present. His real name is P. Sachidanandan. He uses pen name ‘Anand’ for his writings. He is one of the noted living intellectuals in India and his works and thinking are really hard to digest for an ordinary reader. He powerfully mixes myths with reality and historic events and he is one of the gifted writers of Malayalam at present. His works have intense flavours of philosophical flavor, historical context and humanism. He is most known for Govardhande Yathrakal published in the year 1995 and this book has been included in syllabus of Malayalam literature students. This work is highly philosophical, connecting past with present as well as future in a unique mesmerizing way and takes readers to another world of historic events, reality and thoughtful ideas.  There is a particular range of readers in Kerala who go mad on his writings and thoughts and love to read the same book repeatedly. Apart from Govardhande Yathrakal, other noted works of Anand are Aalkkootam (1970), Jaivamanushyan (1991), Marubhoomikal and Undakunnathu (1992).     

Anand is a civil engineer by profession. Sachidanandan was born in 1936 at Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district. He did BTech from Government Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram. He retired as Planning Director of the Central Water Commission and has also worked 4 years in military too. Anand published his first book at the age of 34. It was Aalkoottam and he did it with the help of popular critic Govindan. It was a new experience for Malayalee readers and noted for his writing style. Very soon he published his books – Maranacertificate, Abhayarthikal and Utharayanam. He improved himself as years passed by and during late 80’s he became one of the iconic writers of Malayalam literature through his powerful works one after the other - Marubhoomikal Undakunnathu, jaiva manushyan and Govardhanante Yaathrakal.  Thus he was staked under the most intellectual writers of Malayalam.

He has won Kerala Sahitya academy award, Vayalar award, Odakkuzhal award and Muttathu Varkey Award.  Anand has written novels, short stories, dramas and many more.
