Alokeranjan Dasgupta Biography

Alokeranjan Dasgupta is a renowned writer from Bengal best known for his poetic contributions. He authored 20 collections of poetry works and he translated many foreign language works to Bengali language. Apart from poetry, he has also published many essays. He is known for his distinct prose style. He is a recipient of many major awards of Bengali literature including Ananda Purashkar (1985), Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (1985), Rabindra Puraskar (1987) and Sudha Basu award from the University of Calcutta (1983). His collection of poems Marami Karat earned him Sahitya academy Award for best poetry in 1992. Goethe Prize in Germany (1985) and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (2005) are other major honors received by him.

 

Alokeranjan Dasgupta was born in Kolkata on 6 October 1933. His school education was completed from Shantiniketan and graduation from St. Xavier's College. He took Master’s from Presidency College and completed his PhD from University of Kolkata. Since then he used to translate many foreign works to Bengali and publish in magazines. After completing his Ph.D, he went to Germany on a Humboldt Foundation Fellowship. Once he returned he started his career in teaching profession and has been a professor for many years till his retirement.

 

Dasgupta is a poet admired by millions for his writing style. German government honoured him with Goethe Prize in 1985. He has been closely associated with the Deutsche-Indische Gessellschaft, which provided a bridge between Indian and German literature. Alo Aro Alo, Tushara Jure Trisulacihna, Saranarthir Ritu O Shilpa Vabna, Vramane Nay Vubane, Ekhon Nabhonil Amar Tahabil, Nirishwar Pakhider Upasonalaye, Se Ki Khunje Pelo Iswerkana and Samabayi silpera Garaje are among his poetry works. Some of his published essay works include - Problems of Translation from South Asian Languages and The Shadow of a Kite and Other Essays.
