Aashiq Abu Biography

Aashiq Abu is an upcoming director of Malayalam known for critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies like Salt and Pepper and 22 Female from Kottayam. He is a producer and ad film director too. Most recently on November 1st 2013 (Kerala Piravi day), he got married to top actress of Malayalam, Rima Kallingal with whom he has worked in 22 Female from Kottayam. Marriage was conducted in a simple function at Kakkand Registration office, Kochi and they gave a fund equivalent to marriage expenses to a charity home, thus becoming role models. Both received a lot of appreciations from people belonging to all sectors for this wonderful act.

Aashiq Abu started his career directing Mammootty and Richa Pallu for the movie, Daddy Cool in 2009. But the movie was a commercial failure. Earlier he has worked as assistant director to Kamal. Though his first movie was a flop, he returned back two years later with a powerful script – Salt n Pepper which is often regarded as a trendsetter of Malayalam. Both its theme and its black comedy were well appreciated and the film went on to become one of the highest grosser of the year 2011. Critics praised the direction work of Abu gracefully. Its remake rights were later sold to Hindi and other south Indian languages as well.

In 2012, he directed 22 Female Kottayam which was followed by Da Thadiya. Both movies were noticed for its new themes and both were box office hits too. 22 Female Kottayam is inspired from Hindi movie, Woh hassena tha, starring Saif Ali Khan and Urmila a lot. Though given a few good films, he is often criticized to get inspired by Hollywood films. Idukki Gold is his latest release.  He has also directed the segment starring Kavya Madhavan and Biju Menon in 5 Sundarikal.
