The Madras Society for the Protection of children was founded on the 24th of April 1908 by a band of selfless and generous-hearted citizens with His Excellency Sir Arthur Lawley the then Governor of Madras, as its first President with the object of rescuing destitute and orphan children and giving them shelter, food, clothing, education. .As the committee was trying to solve how to begin the work of such a society without a premises of its own, Dr.V.Varadappa Naidu, a leading medical Practitioner and shortriemdar of Koyembedu offered in December 1908 a generous gift of a plot of land in Vepery and also donated Rs 30,000 for the construction of a building and the maintenence of an orphanage to be named "Dr V.Varadappa Naidu's Orphanage." The Society was registered on 9-3-1909 as a society under Act XXI of 1860. The Hon'ble Mr.Justice C.Sankaran Nair became the first Chairman of the Committee.The Governement recognised the Society's Home as a Junior Certified School for boys in 1925 and for girls in 1926, under the Madras Children Act of 1920. The present premises without subsequent additional constructions was acquired out of cash paid by the heirs of Dr.V.Varadappa Naidu in lieu of the land at Vepery gifted by Dr.V.Varadappa Naidu and Rs.30,000/- donated in cash by Dr.V.Varadappa Naidu in 1908. The Society has now under its Management * Dr.V. Varadappa Naidu’s Orphanage * The Destitute Home for Boys and Girls * The Children's Home for Boys and Girls * Lady Stokes Special School * MSPC Senior Citizens' Home The Inmates of the Orphanage consists of deserving destitute children recommended by Tahsildars. Admissions to the Children's Home are also made on orders of the Child Welfare Committee . Children under the age of 8 years are admitted and given shelter, food, clothing and education. To provide education to the children the society is running an Elementary school titled “Lady Stokes Special School” recognized by the government also getting government’s grant. The Children of this Children's Home are transferred to other Children's Home, when once they attain 14 years of age under the orders of the Child Welfare Committee. The Society had during the last 105 years fed, clothed and educated thousands of destitute and Orphan children. The Society is presently managed by an eminent Managing Committee of prominent public spirited ladies and gentleman with His Excellency Dr.K.Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu as the President and Mr Justice K.Shanmukham, Judge (Retd.) , Madras High Court, as the Chairman. There is also a Ladies Sub-Committee to help the Managing Committee. The society enjoys unique distinction of having since its inception successive Governors of this state as its presidents and Retired Judges of the High Court as its Chairmen.
