Nawab Sarfaraz Khan Biography 
Nawab Sarfaraz Khan was a Nawab of Bengal who ruled in the 18th century. His Bengal provinces included the regions of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. He was nominated him as the direct heir of his maternal grandfather, Nawab Murshid Quli Khan of Bengal as there was no direct heir to him. He was very religious and gave religious matters top priority as a ruler. He neglected administrative matters giving the administration into the hands of his Nazims and Naib Nazims.
He was born in the early 1700’s as the son of Shuja-ud-Din Muhammad Khan and his wife Zainab-un-nisa Begum. He was the grandson of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan of Bengal, who nominated Sarfaraz Khan as his successor to the throne due to the absent of heirs in his royal family. He ascended the throne before abdicating in favour of his father. His father was the Diwan Nazim of Orissa then who marched to the capital hearing this news. However the conflicts were solved by Begum of Murshid Quli Khan giving him the position of Masnad of Bengal. He was recognised as the second Nawab of Bengal. Before his death, he nominated his son Sarfaraz Khan to his position and thus Sarfaraz Khan ascended to the Masnad as the Nawab of Bengal on 13 March 1739 with the title of Ala-ud-Din Haidar Jang.
Sarfaraz Khan was a pious man who devoted his time for religious purposes and prayers and showed less interest in administrative matters. He lacked administrative skills too. He did not bring any substantial changes in the government. He fell out with his Divan, Haji Ahmed and later lost his power and life in the conspiracy of Alivardi Khan, his brother. He was one among those inefficient Indian rulers who never made a mark on the political map of India. However his rule lasted for only a few months.
