Wikipedia Is Available In 229 Languages

In my previous column, I have briefly explained about Wikipedia, its formation and how users add information to this site. You can get the link provided at the end of this article. Through this column, let me carry forward the same topic, but now I deal with other languages except English in which Wikipedia articles are published.

Now Wikipedia is available in 229 languages worldwide, not only English. First it was started in English and now more than 4 million free articles are scattered in this free encyclopedia for you people to refer. Obviously, maximum articles belong to English and they are listed under www.en.wikipedia.org. Wikipedia has already given rebirth to many languages that had reached the ‘extinct’ stage and the process is still going on.

Under the control of Wikimedia Foundation a few other projects sharing the same principles also exist. Wikidictionary – Online dictionary, Wikilibrary – Free online library, Wikiquotes – Collection of quotes, Wiki study materials – that include guides and brief summary of study lessons and Wiki University – free online functions and equipments for studies belong to this category. Here ‘ml’ refers to the language ‘Malayalam’ and it differs according to the language you choose. Wiki library contains old pieces of literature and those books whose ‘copy right’ term has ended. It can save a lot of time you need to search for those books from library. It is easy for you to add small poems to Wikipedia library.

Wikipedia in Malayalam

Wikipedia available in 229 languages is written in Malayalam too. It was started on December 21^st, 2002. First article was the list of 51 Malayalam alphabets and now it contains more than 28K articles. Each month, it records 27 lakh visitors too. www.ml.wikipedia.org is the key to that Malayalam Wikipedia site. It contain articles of many useful categories like science, history, geography, astrology etc.

How to add Malayalam articles to Wikipedia

A provision is there in media wiki software to choose Malayalam as language. Then type your Malayalam words using English keyboard. Automatically words will be converted to English language. You can learn this technique easily and many learning tools are available in Wikipedia software to make this process easy.
