There have been a lot of talks of Virat Kohli being made the captain of the Indian cricket team. The talks mostly centered on Kohli replacing the current captain M S Dhoni. Kohli was in the news regarding the captaincy when the team led by Dhoni was not performing well.

And Kohli is the natural successor of Dhoni. He is being seen as a future captain right from now on. In one of the Test matches of the recently concluded series against Australia, he was seen speaking with Dhoni when the ball was 80 overs old and the new ball could be taken. That shows the involvement of Kohli as an upcoming skipper.

However, when the other players had a word with him, Kohli softened his stand on having the new ball immediately. Even the old ball swings and can create problems for the batsmen. Sachin Tendulkar and Dhoni seemed to point this out to Kohli and that is when he gave in.

This makes one thing clear. Kohli yet needs to be groomed as a skipper at the highest level. He has to learn to be patient and if he remains in the company of senior players like Tendulkar, Dhoni and the others, he will certainly benefit a lot from that. He is a quick learner, no doubt about that and he will certainly grasp things faster.

However, he has a good chance to hone his captaincy skills when he captains the Royal Challengers Bangalore side. That will help him get an idea of what it is like to captain a side like India at the highest level – the Test cricket. Aggression in the smaller formats is alright, but one has to take things by and by in Tests.

Kohli has got a good experience of captaining the Under-19 side and also the Bangalore team during the IPL. Both the times it was an aggressive captaining by Kohli that brought him success at one level or the other. Yes, things were not always on his side, but he left no stone unturned from his side.

But he will certainly get a lot of tips from the support staff at various levels and that will be a big plus for Kohli in the days to come.
