Interesting History Of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is not only the largest city in Gujarat state but also the seventh largest city in India. It lies on the banks of the Sabarmati River. It was the former capital of Gujarat until it was shifted to Gandhi Nagar in the year 1971.

Early History

Solanki King Karandev waged war with Bhil King Ashapall also called as Ashval. Karandev won the war and he established the new city Karnavati after his name on the banks of the River Sabarmati. After a brief rule of Vaghela dynasty, Mughals captured this place and brought it under their kingdom.

Bravery of the Soil

The name Ahmedabad was given by the Sultan Ahmed Shah of Muzaffarid Dynasty. He came to this place for hunting in 1411 and was camping on the banks of the river. There he was a brave hare chasing a ferocious dog. He was dumbstruck by this scene and inquired about this. He came to know that that was due to the bravery of the soil. He was attracted by this and named the place after his name as Ahmedabad and established his capital there.

Mughals and Marathas

During the rule of Mahmud Begada, the grandson of Ahmed Shah, in 1487, a six meter long wall with 12 gates and 189 bastions was built surrounding the city. Muzaffar II was the last king of this dynasty. Akbar, the Mughal Ruler captured Ahmedabad in 1537 and brought it under his rule. Later in 1753, the Maratha Generals, Raghunath Rao and Damaji Gaekwad brought this place under their kingdom putting an end to the Mughal rule.

British waged war with Marathas and captured the place. After the First Anglo Maratha War, they took control of Ahmedabad on 18th February 1780. But later it was restored to the Marathas. Again in 1818, the British East India Company brought this city under their control and established their military cantonment in 1824. The railway line between Ahmedabad and Bombay was laid in 1864.

Ranchchodlal Chhotalal contributed to the industrial development of the place. He did not like high schools but rather preferred technical schools that imparted technical education to the youths. Many such schools were started and the students of technical schools received scholarships for continuing their education.
