History Of Trichy

Trichy, the fourth largest city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has a long and interesting history and the archaeological evidences prove this. It is located on the banks of the River Cauvery. The famous Kallanai was built on it during the tenure of Cholas. The Rock Fort is the important landmark in the city. It could be seen from at a distance and could be seen in the Trichy photos and Trichy videos.

The history of Trichy starts from 300 B.C. when one of its suburbs Woriyur served as the capital of Cholas. Mahendra Varma Pallava I brought this place under his control in 590 A.D. and it continued to be the territory of Pallavas and Pandyas until 880 A.D. when Aditya Chola added it to Chola Empire. Hoysalas occupied Trichy in 1225 A.D. Then later Pandyas ruled this place from 1216 to 1311. Pallava king Mahendravarman I built the cave temples at Rock Fort.

Delhi Sultanate placed an envious eye on the resources of Trichy and sent Malik Kafur. Malik Kafur defeated the Pandyas in 1311 and plundered the kingdom. For next 67 years it was under the control of the Delhi Sultanate and Madurai Sultanate. The Vijayanagar empire and the Madurai Nayaks ruled this place till 1736. During the reign of Viswanatha Nayaka, Teppakulam and the Fort were built. From 1616 to 1634 and from 1665 to 1736, it remained the capital of the Nayaks of Madurai. The rule of Nayaks ended when the king Meenakshi committed suicide in 1735.

Chanda Sahib ruled the place from 1736 to 1741 until he was imprisoned by the Marathas. The administration of the place was done by the Maratha general Murari Rao 1741 to 1743 under the supremacy of the Nawab of the Carnatic. However, the nawab Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah was uprooted by Chanda Sahib in 1751. Chanda Sahib grabbed Trichy and brought it under his control. This led to the Second Carnatic War. In this war, British East India Company and Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah fought on one side and French East India Company and Chanda Sahib fought on the other side. Finally the French alliance was defeated and Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah got back to throne.

Within four decades Trichy faced four invasions, the first from Nanajaraja in 1753, the second invasion by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1780 and the third from the son of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan in 1780. The secret alliance of the Nawab of Carnatic, Umdat Ul Umra and Tipu Sultan infuriated the British and they brought Trichy under their control in 1801. Thus Trichy became a part of Madras Presidency.

The full name Trichy is Tiruchirappalli. It is said that there lived a Jain Monk called Chira and the city was named after him as Tiru Chira Palli meaning the place of the respected Chira. According to another story, the name would mean Thiru Shri Ranganathan Palli. That implies the place where Lord Ranganathan reclines. Tiru Sila Palli means holy rock town. The city was developed after the independence of India and the Trichy municipality was turned into Municipal Corporation in 1994.
