A Short History Of The ICC T20 World Cup

The fifth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup has got underway in Bangladesh. This time, there will be a total of 16 teams. Out of these 16 teams, 10 countries are full members and the six others are associate members.

As of the ICC rankings on 8 October, 2012 eight teams have qualified for the super 10 stage directly. Apart from India, the other teams are Australia, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies. The other two prominent teams, the hosts Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have qualified for the group stage.

The above-mentioned eight teams will meet the remaining two that will be chosen from the group stage. United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Ireland, Nepal, Hong Kong and Netherlands along with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will fight it out for the next stage.

The first World Cup was played in the year 2007. The beginning to the World Cup was an explosive affair as it was India and Pakistan meeting for the finals at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. India came out on top with five run victory.

The second World Cup took place in England and it was once again the Asian countries fighting for the top honor. The final was played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan had missed the chance of winning the title against India. But this time they defeated Sri Lanka to be crowed the winners.

West Indies hosted the third version of the T20 World Cup. And it was the first time that England won a tournament at the world level. They defeated Australia in a comparatively one-sided match as they could take just three England wickets.

Sri Lanka became the first Asian country to host the smallest format of the World Cup and was also the first one to reach the finals as a host country. However, the team led by Darren Sammy didn’t make it look as final. Chasing a decent 138 runs for victory, the hosts were bowled out for a mere 101 runs in front of their own fans.

It is now time for another T20 World Cup. And it remains to be seen how India performs on the same pitches, where they have just had a terrible Asia Cup.
