Chottanikkara Temple is popular for the Hindu mother goddess Bhagawati and is noted for its architecture. Chottanikkara Devi is the main deity here and is worshipped in different forms namely Saraswati in the morning dressed in white, Lakshmi at noon dressed in crimson and Durga in the evening dressed in blue.

The temple is haunted by those who have mental illness. Guruthi Pooja in Keezhkkaavu temple at Chottanikkara is famous. Chottanikkara Makam Thozhal is important festival celebrated here. This area was once a dense forest and yakshis and rakshasas were believed to exist here.
