Vellode Birds Sanctuary spreads over an area of 77.185 hectares and comprises Periyakulam Lake. It is located in Chennimalai Main Road and the region is worth visiting from September to January. The vegetation of the place includes Acacia Nilotica, Palmyra, Eucalyptus plants and many varieties of shrubs.

 

This is the home of many species of resident birds and migratory birds. The birds start coming when the northeast monsoon brings rain in September. The abundant feed in the agricultural fields nearby and the numerous trees that is helpful in perching and nesting attract these birds.

 

There is a watch tower for bird watching. Along with this, there is a small park and a tourist canteen building. The vehicles are not allowed to enter beyond a restricted point to maintain silence in the place. No entry fee is collected. It is better to take a binocular to view the distant birds.
