The tomb of Akbar was built between 1605 and 1613 A.D. over 119 acres of land in Sikandra. The construction of this tomb was started by Akbar himself and was completed by his son Jahangir after the death of Akbar.

A wall of 105 meter square encloses the tomb. The building was made of deep red sandstone with white marble inlays. The southern gate has marble chhatri on its top. The structure is a four tiered pyramid shaped building with a false tomb on the marble pavilion. The original tomb was located on its basement.
