Yasmin Ponnappa Biography

Yasmin Ponnappa is a model turned actress, who works in south Indian films. She is Bangalore-based model, who later moved to Mumbai. She marked her film debut with Thiagarajan Kumararaja's gangster film Aaranya Kaandam released in 2011. The movie opened to to high critical acclaim but underperformed at box-office. Over the years, it achieved cult classic status. Yasmin played the female lead of Subbu in this National award winning film. She also appeared in 2017 short film, Kalki.

Yasmin Ponnappa began her career as a model in Bangalore. To get better opportunities in modelling industry, she moved to Mumbai later, where she established herself. At first she signed a contract with Elite Model Management agency, and shot a few commercials for Nivea Deodorant and Tropicana juice, followed by Opulex diamond bracelets, for which she gained initial recognition. Yasmin was the initial choice for the lead heroine for academy award winning Slumdog Millionaire (2008) for which she was shortlisted. She even took part in initial script reading sessions with its director Boyle. However her role was later replaced by Freida Pinto, who shot to international fame after movie release.

Yasmin debuted with Aaranya Kaandam released in 2011. The film opened to high reviews. As a part of the preparation of the role, he attended the acting workshops conducted by Guru Somasundaram. She played the role of young Subbu in the film. Leading online movie sites - Fully Filmy and Behindwoods b listed Yasmin's role amongst the strongest female characters ever written in Tamil cinema. In 2014 she was featured in a music video titled "The Madras Song”. She played a dual role in 2017 short film titled, Kalki.
