Y. Vijaya Biography

Y. Vijaya is a south Indian film actress and trained dancer. She acted in more than 1000 films belonging to all south Indian languages. She acted as parallel lead opposite N. T. Rama Rao in the film Sri Krishna Satya. Vijaya is associated with film scene since mid-1970s, marking her debut with Vani Rani (remake of Seeta Aur Geeta), where she appeared in a bit role. She has been regular in movies since then. She predominantly worked in Tamil and Telugu movies, apart from a few movies in Kannada and Malayalam languages. She has retired from films after 2001.

 

Her full name is Yenigandla Vijaya. She was born on 8 February 1957 in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Her father worked in a cooperative marketing society, and her mother was a housewife. Vijaya has 9 siblings, and she was born as the 5th child to her parents. Her interest in dance was noticed by her parents at the age of three, when she used to dance to the tunes of the songs played in radio. While at school too she participated in dances. She was initiated to the formal training in dance forms during the summer vacation of class 8. She continued with her classes.

 

After she reached Chennai, she learnt dance from Vempati China Satyam. A film producer who visited the guru roped her in for a film role. Thus she marked her film debut with Vani Rani (1974), and played a dancer beggar in the film. Since then she became a regular fixture of many Tamil and Telugu film directors. Her brother Y. Raja is a TV actor. After her marriage in 1985, she continued with her film acting.
