Vivek Harshan Biography

Vivek Harshan is a National award winning film editor of south Indian cinema, who predominantly works in Tamil and Malayalam languages. He received the National Film Award for Best Editing for Jigarthanda (2014) and is noted for his works since 2007. His editing work for Mammootty starrer Big B, Mohanlal starrer Sagar Alias Jackie Reloaded and Prithviraj starrer Anwar were noticed for its technical side. These movies were listed among big budget action thrillers of Malayalam during 2000s, though not commercially successful (except moderate success of Big B). 22 Female Kottayam is another noted work of Malayalam. Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga, Kaaki Sattai and Jigarthanda are his noted Tamil movies.

Vivek entered film industry as an independent editor through 2007 Malayalam film – Big B. He got noticed for his debut work itself, as he brought a sort of freshness to Malayalam films. He earned the basics of editing from his guru Anthony, whom he dedicated his debut National award. It was Anthony who taught him to be alone while doing the editing process – a method continued by Antony himself. Though he did the editing course Chennai, it was Antony (of Kaakha Kaakha and Ghajini fame) who gave him the real experiences of editing world. Vivek also assisted his guru for three years.

With Karthik Subbaraj and Bobby Simha grabbing the headlines through their works, Vivek’s work didn’t receive that much appreciation. In Vivek’s opinion, editing is an invisible job and it’s editor’s job not to keep the film dragging. Karthik Subbaraj gave him full freedom to work alone in Jigarthanda, which later helped him to bag critics’ appreciation and National award. His most favourite film is Requiem for a Dream. Now he is planning to open his studio in Chennai.
