Vinod Mankara Biography

Vinod Mankara is an award winning film director and screenwriter associated with Malayalam cinema. He is best known as a documentary film maker. He owns 2 National Film Awards, 8 Kerala State awards, 2 Kerala Kalamandalam awards and 7 Kerala Film Critics’ Awards to his credit. He is a native of Mankara village near Palakkad, and hence Mankara tag is added to his name.

Mankara has more than 600 documentaries to his credit and numerous recognitions in this category as well. In 2017 he recent feature film, Kambhoji starring Vineeth and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy. The film received 5 state awards including best makeup artist, best music, lyrics and female playback singer. His debut feature film, Karayilekk Oru Kadal Dooram earned 35 awards including Film critics award for the best debut director.

Vinod hails from Mankara village near Palakkad. He started his career as a freelance journalist for print media and has worked in Delhi and a few more cities across India. Later he started his career with Surya TV as Programme Manager. Later he worked as Chief Manager, Programmes at MET(Middle east television), Chief producer and a few more designations. He also worked as senior Producer with Asianet.

Vinod Mankara started off with documentary films, and contributed more than 600 in this field. He won 8 Kerala state awards. He is a winner of Kerala State Film Award for three consecutive times, and Before Brush Dropped, Nalacharitham Anchaam Divasam etc are among those award winning ones. His documentary Beyond or Within (2003) received National award.

He marked his feature film debut with award winning, Karayilekk Oru Kadal Dooram which earned 35 film awards. Later he directed a few more offbeat movies such as Ottamantharam, Priyamanasam and Kamboji, and all of them received critics’ award. Kamboji is the last work of celebrated poet, O. N. V. Kurup as a lyricist.
