Vikramaditya Motwane Biography

Vikramaditya Motwane is a critically acclaimed film director and screenwriter of Bollywood known for his directorial ventures, Lootera and Udaan. He was also the screenwriter of Dev.D (2009) and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (2007). He has been a long-time assistant of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and has worked as an assistant for his movies, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002) before entering screenwriting and direction field. Udaan released in 2010 marked his successful debut as a director which bagged maximum awards at several award functions including prestigious Filmfare. His second movie, ‘Lootera’ based on O Henry’s short story – The last leaf, released in 2013 was praised by critics for its romantic beauty and narration. Motwane is married to photographer Ishika Mohan.

He was born in Mumbai on 6 December 1976. He worked as an assistant of Sanjay Leela Bhansali for a long time. He later choreographed songs of Anurag Kashyap's film Paanch (2003) and Deepa Mehta’s Water (2006). Then he worked as a scriptwriter for a couple of movies, Dev D and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. Dev D, the modern version of Devdas was praised a lot for its experimental idea and freshness. With his written script, he directed the first movie, Udaan. The movie was financed by Anurag Kashyap's production house, Anurag Kashyap Films. Udaan accumulated numerous awards at various award functions.

Udaan won seven Filmfare awards including Filmfare critics’ award for best movie, best story and screenplay. It also won him the Best Director Award at the 2011 Star Screen Awards. It also participated in the Un Certain Regard (A Certain Glance) category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The movie made with a moderate budget of 5 crores managed to collect 30 crores and was declared a super hit. His upcoming movie is Bhavesh Joshi.
