Venugopal Madathil Biography

Venugopal Madathil is a well-known cinematographer associated with Malayalam film industry since 1990s. He has worked with almost all leading mainstream directors of the industry like Kamal, Sibi Malayil, A. K. Lohithadas, Rajasenan etc. He has also handled camera work for some off stream Malayalam projects too. Nammal, Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum, Joker, Pallavur Devanarayanan, Meghamalhar, Aadyathe Kanmani, Jalolsavam, Amrutham etc are among his noted and successful projects. His camera work for the beautiful songs of Meghamalhar, Jalolsavam and Nammal were well appreciated.

Venugopal Madathil was born on 5 June 1966 in Kozhikode, Kerala. His father M. N. Panicker was a renowned Ayurveda doctor from Kerala. His father dreamed to see him as an engineer. Venugopal enrolled for his engineering degree as well. However his passion for photography prompted him to study more about this field. He was drawn towards this art after he spent his free time in his uncle's studio. He started learning camera work, film developing and other related jobs during his free time, and his interest shifted from engineering to photography. His father was not at all happy about it. He was not at all interested in letting his son join film industry too. But Venugopal finally made it, and got permission from his father to do a course in photography in Chennai.

The legendary writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair is a close friend of his father, who introduced him to acclaimed cinematographer Jayanan Vincent. He assisted Vincent for the movie, "Uyaranagalil", but took a temporary break from the industry following his father’s death. Years later he returned to the film industry as an assistant for M T Vasudevan Nair's "Anubandam”. He worked as an Independent Cameraman for the Tamil film "Pournami Rojakkal", followed by Malayalam film, "Ellarum Chollunnu". After that he turned a full-fledged cinematographer.
