Utpalendu Chakrabarty Biography

Utpalendu Chakrabarty is a critically acclaimed Bengali moviemaker who has won four National awards up-to-date. His 1982 movie Chokh bagged both the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film and Direction at the 30th National Film Awards. The movie also received OCIC Award at Berlin International Film Festival. His debut movie Maina Tadanta won Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director in 1980. ‘Music of Satyajit Ray’ won National award for best film in the non-feature category in 1984. He has also served as the music director of a couple of movies like Chhaturtha Panipather Juddha, released in 1995. He has also directed a few documentaries and telefilms.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1948. He studied at the prestigious Scottish Church College. During this time he was active in student’s politics and is known for his association with tribal people of Purulia. After studies he started his career as a teacher, though gave up his career to join movies later. He was active with new wave cinema in the 1980s winning many National awards for Bengali. Chandaneer, Maina Tadanta, Debshishu, Prasab, Phaansi and Chokh are his directorial movies released up-to-date.

 

He was also associated with Bengali Doordarshan throughout 1980s and has directed some television serials, documentary films and tele films also. Kalo Patharer Itikatha, Sonar Chheye Dami and Dwibachan are his noted television works. Noted filmmaker of parallel cinema - Satarupa Sanyal worked under him for long seven years. Most recently he announced three movies; 'Poraner Moyna Re','Matritwa' and 'Love Guru' to be directed by Milan Bhowmick, Utpalendu Chakrabarty and Partha Sarathi Joardar respectively.
