Urvasi Biography

Urvasi is counted as one among the most successful actresses of Malayalam screen who ruled the celluloid during late 80’s and early 90’s. She was the most sought heroine after Shobhana during 90’s and often regarded as one among the best 3 heroines of present times. The third heroine is Manju Warrier. Her sisters Kalpana and Kala ranjini are also successful heroines of south.

 

She debut silver screen through Bhagyaraj’s Tamil movie, ‘Munthaane mudich’ and this movie was enough to place her as the finest heroines of 1980’s. Her first Malayalam movie was Ethirpukkal opposite Ratheesh in 1984. Since her debut, she acted in a series of movies, both Tamil and Malayalam and has been paired opposite almost all leading actors of 80’s. She has been successful in both Kannada and Telugu movies too.

 

Her most notable Malayalam movies during 1980’s include Sukhamo Devi opposite Mohan Lal and Shankar, Mamootty movies - Nira koott and New Delhi as supporting actress, Yuvaganolsavam, Kshamichu ennoru vaakk, Adimakal Udamakal, Desadanakili karayaarilla, Abkari, Ponmutta idunna tharaavu, Oru CBI diary kurippu, Adimakal Udamakal, Thanthram, 1921, Mrigaya, Chakkikotha Chankaran and Swagatham. Her hits of 90’s include Bharatham, Kalippaatam, Aham, Yodha, Spadikam and Mithunam opposite Mohan Lal, Thalayana manthram opposite Srinivasan, Tooval sparsham, Varthamanakalam, Ulsavam, Ente Ponnu thampuran opposite Suresh Gopi and Kuruppinte kanakkupustakam, Ponmutta idunna thaaravu, Malooty, Mazhavil Kaavadi and  Kadinjool kalyanam opposite Jayram. She was successful opposite Mamooty in the movies Kanal Kaattu, Kizhakkan Pathrose and Aayira para. In Kakkathollayiram, she played the role of a mentally challenged girl. She has acted as the leading actress of the comedy actor Jagathish in the movies Bharya, Shreedhanam, Injikaadan Mathai and sons and Simhavaalam Menon.  

 

She fell in love with her co-star Manoj K.Jayan during middle 90’s and got married in 2000. But due to personal indifferences, they parted each other. Movies of their combination include Ethu manju kaalam, Aayiram meni and Pidakozhi koovunna noottandu – the movie writer and produced by her. She was most successful with Mohanlal, but her pairing with Jayram was appreciated most – particularly for the movies – Kadinjool kalyanam and Mazhavil Kaavadi.

 

In most movies, she was placed as a wife or a naughty girl. She has given her best performances too. She has won a hat-trick in Kerala state awards from 1989 to 1991, placing her among the top list of heroines. Mazhavil Kaavadi, Varthamana kaalam, Thalayana manthram, Kadinjool Kalyanam, Bharatham, Kaakka thollayiram and Mughachitram. She won it again in 1995 for the movie Kazhakam, for which she didn’t accept any cash to work with.

 

After break, she took a temporary break from the industry and came back for Satyan Anthikaat’s movie – Achuvinte Amma. She won National Awards in supporting role for this powerful performance. It can be said that it’s the best role Urvasi has ever played onscreen and she repeated the history again by winning State awards for Madhu Chandralekha in 2006, opposite Jayaram. Now she is busy with movies and Television shows.
