Udyavara Madhava Acharya Biography

Udyavara Madhava Acharya was one of the pioneers of Kannada theatre during the 20th century. He was also known as a writer, choreographer, orator and economics professor. He choreographed classical dance and Yakshagana for his theatre productions. He, along with his contemporary theatre personality B. R. Nagesh is regarded as masters of original plays, at a time when Kannada theatre was in the grip and influential style of NSD productions, Karanth being the most prominent play director belonging to this category. He has also served as a faculty in different educational institutions and retired as Principal at B B Hegde College of Business Management Kundapur. He taught economics at various colleges. He is recipient of the Rajyotsava Award in the year 1999.

 

Udyavara Madhava Acharya was born in Udupi District of Karnataka on March 25, 1941. He is founder of the theatre group, "Samuha", which has performed over 40 plays.  As a theater artist, he has always experimented with his works to bring something new. He was a person who believed in originality and that’s the main reason why his works were not at all influenced by popular traditions or style of drama prevailing during his period.  As a writer, he has published 6 poetry collections and many essays. Dance Drama Scripts and short story collections are other contributions. Rangasthalada Kanavarikegalu, Hu Midi Hadu (for children) and Radhe Emba Gathe are his noted poem anthologies. As a playwright, his noted plays are Iddakkidanthe Nataka, Edeyolagana Dipa, Gode, Krishnana Solu and Rani Abbakka Devi.

 

Udyavar Madhava Acharya has been chosen as the president of the second Udupi District Sahitya Sammelana. He was professor of economics at Bhandarkar's College in Kundapur from 1965 to 1969. Then he joined Poornaprajna College in Udupi where he worked as faculty from 1969 to 1996. He retired as Principal of the B.B. Hegde College in Kundapur in 1997.
