Shahir Krishnarao Sable Biography

Shahir Krishnarao Sable, also called Shahir Sable was a legendary folk artist from the state of Maharashtra. He was accomplished singer, writer, playwright, play director and performer on stage. He was associated with Maharashtrachi Lokdhara or folk dances of Maharashtra, and performed across the state. His son Devdatta Sable is a famous Marathi music composer. His grandson Kedar Shinde is a Marathi filmmaker. He is an also actor, director, producer and screen writer from Maharashtra, deeply inspired from his grandfather. His daughter Charusheela Sable is a Marathi actor. His son in law Ajit Vachani is also an actor.

 

Shahir Krishnarao Sable was born on 3 September 1923 in Pasarni, Wai, Satara. During his younger days he was drawn towards music and learnt flute during his childhood days. He did his primary school studies from his village, and then moved to his maternal uncle’s home where he continued with his studies. He studies till 7th grade and discontinued his studies. He was influenced by Pandurang Sadashiv Sane and Indian freedom struggle those days.

 

As an artist he performed Maharashtrachi Lokadhara (Folk dances of Maharashtra) across the state, thus playing his part in reforming this dying art form, which include Lavani, Balyanruttya, Kolinruttya, Gondhalinruttya, Manglagaur, Vaghyamurali, Vasudeo, Dhangar etc. He composed songs and plays, and also performed as an actor. Some of his famous songs are Adhi Ganala Rani Aan Na, Maharashtra Jai Maharashtra Jai, Garjaa Maharashtra Majha, Ya Go Dandyavarna Boltoy, Are Krishna Are Kanha, Athshe Khidkya Navshe Daara etc. Andhala Daltay is one among his favourite plays. He is a recipient of Padma Shri award in 1998, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar in 1990 and many other honours. He passed away in 2015.
