Thampi Kannanthanam Biography

Thampi Kannanthanam is a producer and director of Malayalam movies. He has written the screenplay of a few of his movies too. He is a popular director of action movies of Mohanlal - Rajavinte Makan (1986), Boomiyile Rajakkanmar (1987), Onnaman (2001), Maanthrikam (1995), Vazhiyorakkazhchakal (1987), Nadodi (1992) and Indrajaalam (1990) and all these movies have played a significant role in placing Mohanlal as a leading action hero of Malayalam. Rajavinte Makan played a significant role to give stardom to Mohanlal and the director has announced its sequel too. Other hit movies of Thampi as a director include - Aa Neram Alppa Dooram (1985) and Chukkan (1994).

Apart from these directorial ventures, Thampi has written the screenplay of a few of his movies and produced a few as well. Among his movies, he has produced 5 of which except Janmandharam (1988), all the movies had Mohanlal as lead. Those movies are - Rajavinte Makan (1986), Vazhiyorakkazhchakal (1987), Indrajaalam (1990) and Maanthrikam (1995) and all these movies were blockbusters at box office too. He has written the story and scripts of his movies - Aa Neram Alppa Dooram (1985) and Janmandharam (1988). He has written the story of his last movie – Freedom which was released in the year 2004.

Thampi started his career as an assistant director during 80’s. He has acted in minor roles during this era too. As an assistant director, he has worked for the movies - Postmortem (1982), Attimari (1981) and Ethikkara Pakky (1980). Ethikkara Pakky, a periodic movie was his first movie in Prem Nazir and Jayan were the leading stars.  He has also appeared in the movies like Itha Oru Theeram (1980), Attimari (1981) and Madrasile Mon (1982). Years later he has appeared in Mohanlal’s movie – Ustaad and movies like Thudarkatha and Oru cheru punchiri.

Now it’s the time of sequels, and after the sequel Irupatham Noottandu of Sagar Elias Jacky Reloaded, now it’s the time of yet another sequel of Mohanlal’s action movies of 80’s – Rajavinte Makan.
