Tapan Das Biography

Tapan Das is a cine personality from Assam. He is an actor, director and screenwriter of Assamese cinema. He is also a stage actor. Now he is associated with Theatre Surjya, a new mobile theatre group of Assam founded by Munindra Barman in 2015. Tapan plays lead character roles for this theatre group. During 2015-2016 season, he played lead role in three of the plays staged by this group – Army, Bhagawan and Dandanayak, written by Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Sebabrat Baruah. He has previously worked with mobile theatres like Kohinoor, Bordoisila, Shakuntala Theatre and Rajtilak Theatre.

Tapan Das was born on 11 January 1962 in Guwahati, Assam. His father is a retired government officer who worked in PWD department. He took to film acting since 1980s. He was in his high school when he started his acting in the early 1980s. Because of the frequent transfers of his father, his education was completed at different schools and colleges. He has been a brilliant student also, who completed his engineering degree from Assam Engineering College. He was quite regular in theatre world and a popular actor before he joined film industry.

As a film actor he got his first break through 1984 movie, Sendoor directed by Pulak Gogoi. His second movie was Shakuntala Aru Sankar Joseph Ali directed by    Nip Barua. He played lead role opposite Mridula Baruah in this movie. Till now he has completed 35 years in the film industry. He worked in around 20 films as an actor. He frequently worked with directors like Bhabendra Nath Saikia, Munin Barua, Prodyut Kumar Deka, Bidyut Chakravarty etc. He also published one book titled Meghmallar.
