T. R. Ramachandran Biography

T. R. Ramachandran was a popular actor associated with Tamil cinema in the early talkies and golden era of Tamil cinema. His career spanned to three decades since his debut release, Nandakumar in 1938, apart from 1982 film, Deviyin Thiruvilaiyadal, after a break a 14 years since he took retirement from acting in the late 1960s. He played lead roles since his second movie, Vaayaadi released in the year 1940, and throughout 60s, he mostly played character roles. As a film hero, he is best known for 1941 movie, Sabapathy – his most successful film. He excelled in comic roles, both in lead and supporting, like Baghdad Thirudan.

 

His full name is Thirukampuliyur Ranga Rao Ramachandran. He was born on 9 January 1917 in Tiruchi district, Tamil Nadu. As a child he was not interested in studies. He went against his father's wishes and ran off to become an actor. He was a comedian, both in profession and in real life and was known to have tons of fun to be around. He was a reputed person in the cine world, known for his distinguished looks. His distinctive saucer-eyes earned him the name "The Eddie Cantor of India". He loved betal leaf with toppings.

 

Nandakumar in 1938 was his first film as an actor, which failed in box office. However he bagged his first lead role very soon. He played the lead role of a hen-pecked husband in Vaayaadi. The movie got released in 1940, and since then he played lead roles for a long time. Ponvayal and Rajee En Kanmani are his memorable roles in the 1950s, where he played male lead. By 1960s, he moved to character roles, mostly father kind of roles, before disappearing from screen.
