Sujata Mehta Biography

Sujata Mehta is a Bollywood actress of Gujarati origin best known for playing the protagonist in Pratighaat (1987), a feminist drama directed by N. Chandra. The movie was a commercial hit. Sujata was also seen in a supporting role Chanchal S. Yadav for the Bollywood flick - Yateem (1988). Tyaagi (1992), Aaaj ki Aurat (1993), Dhartiputra (1993), Hulchul (1995) and Judge Mujrim(1997) are a few more roles she played on big screen. Sreekanth (tele-serial), Khandaan (1985), "Yeh Meri Life Hai" and "Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Kaa" (2006) are some of her television works. Sujatha started her career doing Gujarati plays. As a theater artist, she got opportunity to work with Kanti Madia, Pravin Joshi, Latesh Shah, Dinkar Jani, Arvind Trivedi and with writers such as Raju and Tushar Joshi.

Her uncle Hansu Mehta and aunt Devyani Mehta were part of Gujarati plays and as a young child, Sujata got fascinated by their appearances on stage. She attended rehearsals also. Thus she too, started her professional career as a child artist. Wait Until Dark – was her first play in which she played protagonist’s daughter. Ame Baraf Na Pankhi – in the late 1970s was her first major hit in which she played a young girl suffering from cancer. Later she appeared in many plays, around 20. Chitkar – is one of her memorable plays.

She shared stage space with Jha brothers- Muni and Hemant Jha, which she enjoyed most. Sreekanth (tele-serial) and Pratighaat (1987) made her a popular actress in the late 1980s. But the actress is hesitated to take television roles and she prefers theatre. Weekly and episodic serials are better than daily soaps – the actress remarks. She studied Psychology, a subject which deeply interested her. “Fedora” – is her dream role and she wants to play either mother or daughter for the film. Her role for Yateem earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nomination.
