Suhasini Maniratnam Biography

Suhasini is a talented south Indian actress who was in the top during 1980’s. She was equally successful in all South Indian languages. She belongs to a Cinema family too, filled with talented people. She is the wife of famous director Mani Ratnam. Her father Charuhasan is a famous actor who has won National Awards for best actor. Her uncle too, Kamala Hasan (younger brother of Charu hasan) is one among the most talented directors/actors of Indian film industry who has given valuable contributions to the field. Thus hers’ is a unique family with three winners of National awards, best acting category. She won it for Sindhu Bairavi in 1986.

 

Her first movie was Nenjathe Killathe of 1980 (Tamil) and she entered Kannada film industry with Benkiyalli AraLida Hoovu in 1982, and both these movies fetched her state awards and Filmfare awards respectively. Her Kannada movies Bandhana and Suprabhata were great successes during 1980’s and in most cases she presented herself as a simple girl or Indian woman. People loved to see her in that image too and she was a popular face in south Indian films that time. Her pairing with Vishnuvardhan was noted most and together they delivered many Kannada hits of 80’s including Mathad Mathad Mallige, Muthina Haara, Bandhana, Suprabhata, Hendthig Helthini and Himapatha.

 

She entered Malayalam film industry with Koodevide in 1983, opposite Mamootty. Her role as a matured school teacher who gives good lessons to her dearest student Rehman was well received and appreciated. After that, she did a string of woman oriented movies in Malayalam including Ezhuthappurangal, Pranamam, Raakkuyilin raga sadasil, Vaanaprastham, Manipathurile Aayiram siva raathrikal, Theerthadanam and Ente upasana. Among all Malayalam heroes, her pairing with Mammooty was noted most and together they did, Raakkuyilin raga sadasil, Koodevide, Manipathurile Aayiram siva raathrikal and many more movies. She has received Kerala state awards twice for the movies – Ezhuthapurangal and Theerthadanam.

 

Majority of her hits include other South Indian languages cementing her among the most talented heroines of 1980’s. she has won South Indian Filmfare awards 6 times and in 1996, she entered direction field with Indira. A.R.Rehman gave music to this movie. She gives her whole support to her husband Mani Ratnam and assists in his work too.

 

She is a self-described atheist. In an interview, she said "I don't believe in God, in prayer, in going to temples begging God to give me and my family happiness.
