Subhendu Chatterjee Biography

Subhendu Chatterjee was a veteran actor of Bengali cinema and television. A contemporary of Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar and actor Soumitra Chatterjee, he has worked with both in numerous movies as second lead. Later he played numerous character roles on big screen as well as small screen and spent about 4 decades in the industry. Noted Bengali actor, who has worked in a few Bollywood movies - Saswata Chatterjee is his son. Subhendu was a physician by qualification, though he took acting as his profession.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1936 to Shailendra Chattopadhay and Manimala Devi. A brilliant student in studies, he completed MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in 1960 afetr spending almost 7 years there. He practised as a physician for a while in Civil Defence and Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He was associated with amateur theatre since younger days and his passion to this field grew more than his career as a doctor. He got involved with the IPTA and later decided to try his luck in movies.

 

He started his film career with Mrinal Sen's Akash Kusum in 1965. The movie starred Soumitra Chatterjee and Aparna Sen in the lead roles. Later he worked with Soumitra Chatterjee in numerous movies, as second lead. He worked with Satyajit Ray in Chiriyakhana. It was for the first time he shared screen space with the legend – Uttam Kumar. Since then he regularly appeared in the movies of Bengali stars Uttam Kumar and Soumitra Chatterjee, and very soon he became heartthrob of Bengali filmgoers. His role as Sankar in Chowringhee in 1968, aside Uttam Kumar is one of his most memorable ones. He also played lead roles in a few movies. He worked in Aranyer Din Ratri (1969) and its sequel, Abar Aranye (2003), which was one of his last appearances onscreen.
