Sreekumaran Thampi Biography

Sreekumaran Thampi is a noted lyricist, director, producer, and screenwriter in Malayalam cinema. Among all his contributions, his contribution as a lyrist is noted most. He has won Kerala state awards for best lyricist twice – in 1971 and 2011. He holds a BTech degree in civil engineering. His masterpiece songs are Chandrikayilaliyunna Chandrakaantham of Bharyamaar sookshikkuka, Mounam polum madhuram of sagara sangamam, Hridayasarasile pranayapushpame, Sree maha ganapathim of Gaanam, Kasthuri manakkunnallo kaattil, Paalaruvi karayil, Akale akale neela kasam of Midu midukki and Swonthamenna padathinendhartham. He is known as Hridaya Ragangaluday Kavi (Poet of Love Songs) and he gives much importance to the beauty of his lyrics.  

His top hits include Malayali penne ninte manasu and Bandu aaru of Bandukkal Shatrukkal, Kasthuri manakkunnallo kaattil of Nayika, Vrischika raathri than of Maappu sakshi, Sree maha ganapathim of Gaanam, Raakkuyil of Kala chakram, Mounam polum madhuram of Sagara sangamam, Poo vili poovili of Vishu Kani, Kaalalme of Naayattu, Paduvaan of Chitramela, akale akale neela kasam of Midu midukki, Chandrikayil aliyunnu and Aakasham bhoomiye of Bharyamar sookshikkuka, Aramani of Prabhatha sandhya, Sandhyakkenthinu of Maaya, Ezhilam paala poothu, Elanji poomanam ozhuki varum, Ashadam, Avani pon pulari, Poomanam pootulangu, Aswathy nakshatrame, Neela kuda nivarthi maanam enikku vendi, Pournami chandrika, Paalaruvi karayil, Oru devan vaazhum, Aa kaiyyilo ee kaiyilo of Ragam, Aa nimishathinte of Chandrakantham, Paadam namukku paadam of Yuvaganolsavam  and Aliveni of Gaanam.

Sreekumaran Thampi was born in Harippad, Alappuzha District on 16 March 1940. Sreekumaran Thampi debut industry as a lyrist through the movie – kattumallika. He was introduced by P.Subramaniyam. It happened in 1966. So far he has written 3,000 lyrics and directed about 30 films, besides producing 22 films. His movie Kanakkum Kavitayum has won National awards while Ganam and Mohiniyattam bagged the state awards. He has written the scripts of 78 movies till now. His brother is a renowned novelist P. Vasudevan Thampi most known for his novel, Sree Krishna Parund, which was later scripted as a movie. His son, Rajkumar Thampi has directed a few movies in Telugu. But he met with an unfortunate death in 2009 and till then, Thampi is less engaged in film industry.
