Soumya Sadanandan Biography

Soumya Sadanandan is a film director from Malayalam film industry, who has earlier been an anchor and actress before. She fulfilled her long dream to turn a director in year 2018 with the movie, Mangalyam Thanthunanena starring Kunchacko Boban and Nimisha Sajayan in lead roles. The movie with a satire tone fared well at box office. She has earlier directed one documentary film titled Chembai: My Discovery of a Legend about the legendary composer. The film won many awards including Special Jury Award at 64th National Film Awards in 2018, apart from Best Documentary at Allahabad International film festival and other honours.

Soumya Sadanandan hails from Sooranad, Kollam District in Kerala. She was born on July 22, 1985. Her father Sadanandhan worked in KSRTC while her mother Urmila Devi retired as teacher. As the family was settled in Thiruvananthapuram as a part of their job, Soumya’s schooling was completed from Pattom, the same city. Since young she was interested in telling stories to her friends, by adding her own elements and a bit of creativity. She regularly watched movies on Doordarshan that time.

Though she wanted to study BA literature, later she joined Government Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. By that time, she got deeply stuck with the world of cinema, and dreamt to make one movie. She even attempted to enter Pune Institute to study film making course. It took long 8 years for her film debut, after many attempts. She even resigned her regular job to pursue a career in films. She is a well-known anchor of Kappa TV and she presented the show, 'Film Lounge' for 4 years. She worked as an assistant director in the industry, did bit roles in films, make a documentary film and finally made her first feature film in Malayalam.
