Sophiya Haque Biography

Sophiya Haque was an English actress and singer who has done a few item songs for Indian movies. She was also a video jockey and dancer. The popular item song ‘September Maatham’ of Tamil movie – Alaippayuthey (2000) was pictured on this model. 'Aisa Pehli Baar Hua Hai' of Har dil jo pyar karega, ‘Rasiya’ song of The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey and “Zindagi ko bina pyaar koi kaise guzare" of Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya are a few of Bollywood item songs pictured on her. Haque is best known for ‘Coronation Street’ where she appeared in the role of Poppy Morales. She died of cancer in January 2013 aged 41.

 

Syeda Sophia Haque was born in England in 1971. Her parents got divorced in her childhood and she was brought up by her mother, who was a school teacher. At the age of 13 she moved to London where she stayed with her father’s family. Haque started as the lead vocalist of the band Akasa and later she worked as a VJ for Channel V and MTV. She also worked as an anchor in Hong Kong in the early 1990s before she moved to India in 1992. She joined Channel V at Mumbai where she worked for many years.

 

Her first appearance for a movie was ‘Khoobsurat’ in 1999. She also appeared in a few television commercials and item songs of Bollywood. She played the role of Rani in 2002 movie Bombay Dreams, music given by A. R. Rahman. After spending a few years abroad, she returned to Bollywood with Salman Khan movie ‘Wanted’, where she played a cameo role. Haque was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 while living with her partner, David White – music director. She died in sleep in 2013.
